piano study for the uncertain

Is this you?

"I wish I hadn't quit the piano when I was a kid."
"I can play, but I'm such a slow reader."
"I've always loved the piano, but I'm too old to start from scratch."
"I'm a singer (guitarist/flutist/drummer) and I think learning the piano could help me, but I'm just not sure."

So often I hear comments like these. And the adults who come to study piano with me have all (yes, all) said, "Wow! Now I get it!" What they "get" is a peek into the workings of music - the abc's, the magic of making good music - it's in the theory.

Understanding music theory is like deciphering the ingenious code that all music comes from. It's the bones of music, rooted in math and patterns. And the piano is the ideal study instrument for three reasons: it's a linear representation of pitch, the tuning is built in and it's commonly available.

I am offering this course because I love watching students discover the secrets of "getting" it.

Theory is the content; the piano is your vehicle.

I hope you will join me for this mini-adventure!

Local pianist and vocalist Lisa Wall-Urgero will offer a piano course this summer for beginning and intermediate students, ages 16 and over. The class takes place at the luxurious, new Iced Pita Music Lessons in Thousand Oaks, conveniently located in the building behind Roxy's Famous Deli on Thousand Oaks Blvd. Small classes will be held on Tuesday evenings, 6:30pm to 8:30pm, beginning July 17 and continuing through August 21. Six weeks of classes, books and materials are included in the $170 course fee. Students will learn fundamentals of music including reading music, playing with expression at any level and how to start from where you are now. Small class size allows for both group and individual attention. No previous study is required; a keyboard or piano to practice on at home is required. (If you are interested in the course, but do not have access to a keyboard instrument, contact Lisa.) Space is limited to five students.
